2010 NRM Trial Sites
South West NRM called for expressions of interest from landholders to host innovative grazing and natural resource management (NRM) trials. The aim was to establish four representative sites across the region.
The objective of the NRM Trial Sites program is to explore sustainable, cost effective land management practices which are relevant to the local and regional land use and of particular interest to the applicant.
The vision for the program is to facilitate individual landowners' involvement in driving change in modern natural resource use, attitudes and practices which will then be widely communicated through local networks.
South West NRM is committed to supporting local landowners and interested parties in developing, demonstrating and showcasing these practices.
Grants offered assistance to landholders for the development of the NRM Trial Sites and to support regular events such as workshops and field days to review progress and to disseminate results. As the funds will only be distributed on four sites, these events (which are a mandatory part of the funding) are the main communication medium for other producers in the area who may have similar issues.
Additionally, it is essential that Reference Groups are formed around the sites for decisions making and information sharing. These groups will be facilitated by South West NRM staff and may encompass an existing landcare group or a network of adjoining land managers. This will ensure options employed are considered locally appropriate and are of sufficient merit. Progress will be regularly reviewed and outcomes assessed on the basis of both environmental and economic return. It is necessary for the applicant to be open to hosting these regular gatherings on the property to ensure trial outcomes are spread as widely as possible throughout the general community.
